Throughout the years, segway polo has attracted much attention from the media and interest in the sport is growing rapidly. The Bay Area Segway Enthusiasts Group, or Bay Area SEG, first started playing segway polo in July of 2004, when a member of the group, Jonathan Clute, suggested they try playing a game of polo on their segways. It turned out to work pretty well and the players enjoyed it a lot. After many months of scheduling they organized the very first official segway polo match on July 11, 2004. Everyone had fun, even the very few spectators, so they organized more matches, and after several games, more and more people started to show up to watch the event, and more people wanted to play the sport.

The sport became so popular they had to create a group for it. The International Segway Polo Association (ISPA) was formalized in 2009, and segway polo now even has it's own championship game. Segway polo is becoming an internationally widespread sport in countries like U.S.A., New Zealand, Germany, U.A.E., France, Switzerland, Austria, Barbados, and Sweden.

Segway polo is also one of the many different types of polo. A few are:

  • Canoe polo
  • Camel polo
  • Cycle polo
  • Elephant Polo
  • Golf cart polo
  • Yak polo
  • Cowboy polo
  • Water polo
  • Regular polo (played on horseback)
